Shelling is Fun and Giving Away Shells is More Fun!

I never thought much about seashells until I moved to Panama City Beach 5 years ago and began walking along the shore. Initially, I would pick up any piece of a broken shell in fascination as I never had the opportunity to do it when I lived elsewhere, growing up in southern California.

Now I'm more selective in my hunt and have resorted to digging to find more hidden treasures. And even though I enjoy all the pretty finds, the shells are not my motivation. I simply like to get outside, walk in the sunshine and if I see a shell or think something special can be found with a little trowel that's kept in my back pocket, I'll stop and investigate.

For me, the joy is in the hunt. And the joy is in the giving away of shells to unsuspecting visitors who happen to cross my path. Yes, Martha, it is more blessed to give than to receive!

  1. My husband and I were digging for shells in Orange Beach, AL. on Halloween this year. Just before sunrise I spotted two ladies walking near the shoreline eagerly searching for shells. We had just found the mother of all spots, it was packed solid with shells due to a recent storm surge. So I walked down to ask if I could share something with them, and began to show them my loot and tell them about the spot, and our technique using a sand flea rake. I also gave them an assortment to keep. They were so excited, and declared it Trick-or-treating! Come to find out they knew a lot about shells too, and we had so much fun chatting, and digging with them. They even went out and bought sand flea rakes of their own. Several curious beachcombers approached us throughout the day, and we gave them all treasures to take home. It was the most fun I've had on Halloween since my son became to old for trick-or-treating. You are right, the joy is in giving them away! What you get in return is so much more!
